Home Companion Respite Care Program
The RSVP Home Companion Respite Care Program provides respite to caregivers – both family members and professionals – who provide 24/7 care to hundreds of senior Nevadans.
The program assists caregivers with family members suffering from Attention-Deficit Disorder, Post Stroke, Dementia, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, cancer, COPD, heart problems, head injuries and seizure disorders. This assistance is key in lowering the stress levels of caregivers, by giving them a break to allow a healthier existence and longer life expectancy, and preventing the institutionalization of their loved ones. It is a low cost/free respite care service and no one is turned away because of inability to pay.
The highly trained RSVP volunteer members provide the caregiver with essential breaks for up to four hours a day to engage in enjoyable activities and attend to their own needs, helping reduce the stress and fatigue as a result of their tireless and unselfish efforts. It also provides the one being cared for with the experience of meeting someone new to talk with. Volunteer members are well prepared with extensive pre-service and in-service training.
This program is helping many elderly and disabled persons in Northern Nevada but more assistance is desperately needed. If you can volunteer a modest number of hours a month to provide respite for caregivers, or if you are a caregiver seeking help, please call Susan Haas at 775-687-4680, Ext. 7 or by email: shaas@rsvp.carson-city.nv.us.
In return for your service, you will receive a monthly stipend and be reimbursed for your mileage. What a wonderful way to reap the personal rewards that come from helping someone in need.
